Discussion of "xarna'u"

Comment #1: Imaginary numbers are not imaginary
la djanuodr (Sat Apr 19 20:28:59 2008)

Use of the gismu "xanri" in translating the term "imaginary number" is
neither culturally neutral nor technically accurate. So-called imaginary
numbers are no more imaginary than negative numbers; although neither
truly exist in the physical realm, both are necessary in solving certain
problems that use physical numbers in both the problem & the answer. It
simply happens that negative numbers occur in simpler problems than those
in which imaginary numbers occur, and so negatives were accepted as "real"
before imaginary numbers were even deemed valid numbers. Neither are
wholly imaginary or wholly real.

Of course, there is still the problem of creating a valid lujvo for the
concept, and until "ka'o" receives a rafsi, there won't really be any
concise & accurate way to refer to the square roots of negative numbers.

You can say "ka'o zei namcu"! But I have no idea if there's somewhere to
enter that sort of thing in jbovlaste; I just got here. :)

mu'o mi'e .bret.
