To say XYZ is cross-country does not mean anything to me. I think the
definition is a bit confusing. But I think I understand you.

Did you mean what I think you mean?
Did you actually mean “x1 CROSSES country of terrain x2 (…)”?
Then x1 could be an imaginary line, a travveler, etc.

In any case the definition should be reworded, I do not quite understand
it.

Right. I will add "crosses terrain" to the English definition.
